Vincenze’s Article on Global Warming

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006

Interesting article on why no one takes global warming seriously from a blog I read occasionally. Check it out.

Well the debate may be over, but I’ve still got to sum up all that was concluded with respect to reasons why no one really cares about Global Warming. This summary includes points raised by others that I agreed with as well as some original material.

Back

gimme-five is back online, at least for the time being.  Here is a timeline of what happened:

Friday Afternoon: Everything is ok, I leave work to meet Jessica at the Austin City Grill.  We eat Mexican food and it is delicious.  The waiter winks at Jessica, but luckily my anger is offset by the fact that the restaurant is entirely powered by wind energy.  Cool!

Friday Night: Jessica and I leave Washington, DC to return to Herndon, VA, where we go to see the Da Vinci Code.  Readers of gimme-five were right, I didn’t like it very much.  But then again I hadn’t read the book.  Jessica had read it and she did enjoy the movie.

Friday Late Night: I check gimme-five, as I always do before I go to bed, and notice it is down.

Saturday Morning: gimme-five is still down.  I check my webhost, Blazernetwork.com and notice that only their front page on their website works.  I try calling them but get redirected to an answering machine.

Saturday Afternoon: gimme-five is still down.  I write a few emails to Blazer Network and get no response.  I have come to expect a lack of response, however, since every time I’ve had a problem in 2006, I have received no response from them.  Oh well.

gimme-five is switching hosts

Saturday, May 27th, 2006

After gimme-five went down for just under 24 consecutive hours since yesterday, I’ve decided that we’re going to switch webhosts.  Our current webhost is blazernetwork.com, who is terribly unreliable.  Our mySQL database goes down for hours at a time at least once every two weeks and sometimes the entire server goes down for extended periods of time.  I didn’t pay money to have a website that goes down all the time.
They guarantee 99.9% uptime or your money back, so I’d better get a refund… I’ll keep you all updated.

Don’t Fall for GM’s Gas Price Deal

Friday, May 26th, 2006

I would like to preface this article by stating that I do not have any hatred toward General Motors.  I simply think that they’re a very poorly managed company.  They desperately need to innovate and adapt to the needs of consumers rather than hope consumers adapt to them.

General Motors has recently rolled out advertisements for consumers in California and Florida.  These advertisements state that if you buy one of GM’s vehicles that get low miles per gallon, they will subsidize the price of your gas so that it only costs you $1.99 per gallon.  Sounds great, right?  Unfortunately, that’s not exactly the way it works.  Consumers should not fall for this deal for the following reasons:

  • The deal is only valid through the end of 2007.  That means if you buy a car today, you get about 1.5 years of “cheap” gasoline.  After that, you’re stuck with a gigantic car and an even bigger gas bill.  This is a kind of dirty trick, because I’m sure many consumers don’t realize it’s only valid through 2007… and they’re going to get stabbed in the back when it’s no good anymore.

Life Expectancy too Long?

Friday, May 26th, 2006

Were humans meant to live as long as we do?  The current life expectancy in the USA is around 80 years old, and this is similar in any civilized country.  However, many people live out the end of their lives on various medications that they need to take in order to not feel pain, or even just to survive.  Furthermore, some body parts lose some of their function (eyes, reproductive organs), and many older people have trouble just getting around the grocery store.  I was just reading that men are 70% more likely to be infertile after age 40 than men who are 30.

I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with this.  It’s awesome that we’re able to live so long.  I’m just curious how long humans would actually live if you didn’t count all the people on life-sustaining medicines.
