Always in a Hurry

Posted in Health by George

I don’t know why, but I always feel like I’m in a hurry to go somewhere when I’m transporting myself from one destination to another.  Take, for instance, on my way to work today.  I was getting off the metro at 7:40, and after a five minute walk to my job I was fifteen minutes early!  But I still squeezed my way to the front of the metro car to try to get the best positioning I could so I could move quickly.

Why do I feel the need to be in such a hurry when it doesn’t really matter?  I’m not sure, but there are tons of other people who act the same way.  There are plenty of people driving around on weekends who drive like maniacs trying to get somewhere quickly.  I’m sure some of them have some place to be, but there’s probably just as many that just feel the need to get somewhere quickly.  I don’t drive fast or anything, but when I get stuck in traffic - even if I have nowhere to be, I get angry.

I guess this article isn’t very profound (I started writing this at 7:55 am, so there’s my excuse).  However, with the amount of stress in our society today, I wish I could relax more on those times when there’s really no need to rush.  And I’m sure others who have this problem would enjoy being able to relax as well.

I’m just rambling now.  Does anyone else feel this way?

You’re not rushing. You’re training to be more productive. Haven’t you heard that year-in, year-out, Americans are the most productive people (except for the Luxemborgians that sneak up occasionally)?

How do you think we get like that? You think we work ourselves out of a job fearing offshoring? Not on your life :-)

I would say that it is a mindset. That type A crap is striking back at you. There are plenty of people not rushing, lots of people take 20 minute breaks during the 15 minute time period, and lots of people get to work late and leave early.

Some people do just enough not to get fired, others are always doing work. While it is nice to be noticed as the “working” guy, be careful because you don’t want to be taken advantage of.
