RIAA: Will you be Sued?

Friday, June 30th, 2006

Probably not. I just checked out an article about the chances of someone being sued by the RIAA. Here are the statistics:

If we divide the total population of the P2P community (~12 million individuals), by the total number of lawsuits in 2004 (6,523), we get 1,840. In other words, your chances of being sued are 1 in 1,840 for all users (regardless of network) per year. How does that stack against all other odds of dying from an intentional or non-intentional injury? According to the National Safety Council, one’s yearly chances of dying from all external causes were 1 in 1,755 in 2002.

you then have a 1 in 45,977 chance of being sued if you do not use FastTrack

Moral of the story is, don’t worry about it too much. If possible, don’t share illegal downloads if you happen to have them, and don’t use Kazaa-esque file sharing. Try torrents instead…

Superman Returns = Awesome

Friday, June 30th, 2006

Just saw Superman Returns last night. Very awesome movie. Superman is definitely the coolest. Great acting, great storyline, great special effects, great movie all around. I definitely recommend checking it out if you’re into action movies. There’s an awesome scene where this guy shoots Superman in the eye and the bullet bounces off in slow motion and hits the ground. So hardcore. Also it parallels the Resurrection story big time for you biblical types out there. Anyways, just thought I’d share. I have included the trailer here for fun and convenience.

Sifting Through Lies On Both Sides in the Debate Over Global Warming

Thursday, June 29th, 2006

Somebody is lying. I do not know who, in the debate on global warming, has been lying but it is clear that lies exist. It is clear that it is not an honest debate. Call it lies, call it spin, call it whatever you want. It really ticks me off that people seem to spend more time spinning the problem of global warming than actually finding out what to do with it.

The reason I say this is because lately, for every news article written about how humans do cause global warming, there is an article stating that the exact opposite is true. For every article claiming the Earth will be too hot for life in ten years, there is an article stating that it will be cooler in ten years. Sometimes articles are written in separate newspapers about the same press release that claim different things (like the National Academy of Sciences study recently). Scientists and authors who write articles stating global warming is not an issue always seem to get traced back to big oil. And scientists and authors who write that global warming is an issue always seem to have evidence that is ambiguous, hard to understand, and sometimes even hidden.

What if the Climate Crisis were World War III?

Thursday, June 29th, 2006

Stumbled across this article today on my world wide web travels today. It talks about what would happen if Churchill in England and Roosevelt in the US were still in power and treating the climate crisis like World War III. Granted, I don’t buy that Churchill and Roosevelt would act this way, and really they don’t have so much to do with this article, but some of the paragraphs at the end are good.

This could all be done with the scientific knowledge of today. We would not have to invent a magic hydrogen bullet to get there. And, we would be creating tons of jobs, making vast improvements in air quality and would not sacrifice much in the way of our standard of living.

The alternative, a real climate crisis, would result in massive upheavals, tremendous changes in our quality of life, our security and would undoubtedly lead to many wars as we struggle to cope with a world in a downward spiral. New Orleans would look like a holiday camp compared to the chaos that could ensue.

Yes, An Inconvenient Truth is Accurate

Wednesday, June 28th, 2006

Many critics have claimed that the problem with An Inconvenient Truth is that the facts are not accurate. This, in fact, turns out to be shoddy criticism. The top climate scientists in the US have approved the movie for accuracy.

The AP contacted more than 100 top climate researchers by e-mail and phone for their opinion. Among those contacted were vocal skeptics of climate change theory. Most scientists had not seen the movie, which is in limited release, or read the book.

But those who have seen it had the same general impression: Gore conveyed the science correctly; the world is getting hotter and it is a manmade catastrophe-in-the-making caused by the burning of fossil fuels.

So basically, all those who bothered to see the movie confirmed that it was all correct. Those who “oppose” the idea that global warming is happening and is caused by humans and is dangerous are the ones who covered their ears and shut their eyes and didn’t even bother to see the film.

“They are quite literally afraid to know the truth,” Gore said. “Because if you accept the truth of what the scientific community is saying, it gives you a moral imperative to start to rein in the 70 million tons of global warming pollution that human civilization is putting into the atmosphere every day.”
