AC at Work: Why Not Err on the Side of Cheap?

Tuesday, August 15th, 2006

Workplaces that are fortunate enough to have air conditioning face a dilemna. That dilemna is that no matter what temperature the air conditioning is set at, there will be people who feel it is too cold or too hot. Some people will bring fans in and claim they are sweating buckets every day when the temperature is set at 80 degrees, and others will claim they can’t type because their fingers are frozen when the temperature is set at 70 degrees. Basically, employers can’t make everyone happy when it comes to the temperature of the workplace.

However, many workplaces err on the side of expensive when it comes to air conditioning or heating. I’m currently sitting in an office with a temperature near 70 degrees. It doesn’t bother most people, including myself, but a small number of people insist that they are freezing. If the temperature is brought up higher, most people don’t care, but a small number of people insist that they are burning up.

gimme-five podcast?

Friday, August 11th, 2006

What the heck? That’s right, gimme-five has a podcast.

I know what you’re thinking: don’t you need visitors to your website before you start a podcast? Ideally, yes, but keeping with gimme-five’s traditional status of “worst website of all time,” I’m going to go against the grain here. Since I am leaving to go to Nebraska with my beautiful girlfriend through this Sunday the 13th, I will be unable to write articles. But that doesn’t mean I won’t use my cell phone to spew worthless blabber on the internet! Prepare to listen to my boring voice rant about boring subjects that I would normally type about! Just check back on this page over the next couple days and hopefully I’ll call in. Woohoo!

If a Real Gas Shortage were to Happen Right Now…

Thursday, August 10th, 2006

If a real gas shortage were to happen right now,

How prepared would you be to deal with it? Instead of the $3-plus gas we have now, what if prices skyrocketed even more, causing supplies to be dedicated to key infrastructure and shipping/emergency vehicles only? Could you and your family handle getting on a bike/running/whatever to keep life as normal as possible?

I normally don’t post things I read on letsrun.com, but this is a reasonably entertaining thread entitled “If a Real Gas Shortage were to Happen Right Now.” Letsrun is a running website, but this is one of the many threads on the message board that stray from running related topics.

A Tribute to the Daring Dragoon

Wednesday, August 9th, 2006

In eighteen-hundred-one the Revolution had been won
And Uncle Sam’s favorite son had a job he needed done
Which brought Jack to a lady, both beautiful and smart
Who found his mix intriguing—a scoundrel with a heart!

From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli
There was never a leatherneck braver, a Daring Dragoon is he
He’ll halt the bold advance of Napoleon’s attack
There ain’t a French or pirate rogue who don’t know Jack!

From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli
Sailin’ round the bloody world to defend democracy
And when ya need a fightin’ man ya’d trust to watch yer back
Just ask the bloke right next ta ya—it’s… Jack!

I just finished watching the last episode of Jack of All Trades, an absolutely wonderful TV series that began in 1999 and lasted a season and a half. There is no doubt in my mind that these were the greatest twenty two episodes of a TV series I have ever seen.

daring dragoonJack of All Trades starred Bruce Campbell as Jack Stiles and Angela Dotchin as Emilia Rothschild. Although I don’t know much about Dotchin, Campbell is best known for being a B-movie king, starring in films such as Army of Darkness while constantly spewing one liners.
