Big News From the Supreme Court

Posted in Environment, Law, Politics by George

From MSNBC:

In a 5-to-4 decision, the court rejected the administration’s argument that it had no legal authority to limit carbon dioxide released from new cars. In a ruling described as a landmark victory for environmental activists, it decided that the EPA does have such authority and that it must give better reasons for not using it than the “laundry list” of “impermissible considerations” it has offered until now.

We’ll see what happens…

    This is interesting…

What if, other countries decided to take this same approach? If an less developed country (periphery) had these limitations imposed on them, it would halt a lot of foreign investment. Transnational corporations thrive on having lax environmental regulations in these LDCs. This would hurt the global economy. Business giants such as Wal-Mart, Toyota, and GM would have to change how they produce, or go about obtaining, all of their units.

While beneficial for the environment, the economy would take such a hit that we would find it hard to even fund some of these eco-friendly measures!

I’m not proposing a farewell to nature’s preservation, I just want to make sure that our current level of business is maintained.

Much of this response looks like it was copied and pasted.

What exactly are you responding to? What approach is being taken here that you’re referring to? The ruling states that the EPA has the legal authority to regulate CO2 emissions.

    1. It does not state that the government must regulate CO2 or to what extent it must do so.
    2. There are no “limitations” being imposed.

And even if you were responding to carbon regulations being imposed, your reasoning is horrendous and unethical.

Transnational corporations thrive on having lax environmental regulations in these LDCs.

So it’s OK for an oil company to go in and destroy the lives of everyone who lives in a third world country because the oil company “thrives” on lax environmental regulations?
