Step Down, for the Good of the Country

I have never been one to quit,” replied Alberto Gonzalez to requests for his resignation as Attorney General.  This statement, and all of the antics caused by Gonzalez over the past few months, have been selfish.

There are many reasons why Gonzalez should step down, but the most compelling reason is that he cannot be an effective Attorney General anymore.  He is immersed in scandal and distracted from his job, and it is unlikely he will get anything done while under this kind of pressure.

Ignore the fact that he’s probably committed perjury and maybe didn’t even read important documents sent to him pertaining to the firing of US attorneys.  It’s relevant, but not nearly as important.  Mr. Gonzalez can no longer be an effective Attorney General.  If you love your country, Alberto, you’ll quit.

I basically agree with you, George, but only because this thing has turned into a circus. Personally, I don’t understand what was so scandalous about firing those US Attorneys in the first place. I mean, isn’t that pretty common? I’m pretty sure Clinton cleaned house when he took office. Granted, Clinton did his firing at the beginning of his term, but I don’t really see how timing is relevant to the discussion considering the rationale for the firings in both cases was the same. So the current administration wanted to make room for more like-minded personnel. So what? It’s happened before, it will happen again, under both Republican and Democrat administrations. Presidents and Attorney Generals have that latitude, like it or not.

Put another way, I am employeed by a public accounting firm, and I do really good work. But if at any time the partners decide to get rid of me, they can. And they can do it without having any reason at all, because I’m an employee at will, just as US Attorneys are. So what I’m saying is that Alberto should have just come clean from the start. Sure he would’ve looked like a dickhead, but at least it would’ve been honest. I’d rather face charges of being a dickhead than face charges of perjury.

And for the record, when Hillary gets elected next year and fires every conservative within reach, my position on this issue will not change.

By the way, what’s gotten into Alan Webb lately? He runs 3:30 for 1500m then 1:43 for 800m. I really hope he’s not doping.
