Partial Birth Abortion Ban Upheld 5-4

Wednesday, April 18th, 2007

Supreme Court decision today in Gonzalez v. Carhart says Congress’s 2003 Partial Birth Abortion Ban is constitutional and does not impose an undue burden.  Among many reasons, the Supreme Court noted that other procedures for abortion exist at that stage (2nd trimester) in pregnancy.

You can read the decisions here.  I might comment more later, although lots of people will be doing that all over the internet today.

Big News From the Supreme Court

Monday, April 2nd, 2007

From MSNBC:

In a 5-to-4 decision, the court rejected the administration’s argument that it had no legal authority to limit carbon dioxide released from new cars. In a ruling described as a landmark victory for environmental activists, it decided that the EPA does have such authority and that it must give better reasons for not using it than the “laundry list” of “impermissible considerations” it has offered until now.

We’ll see what happens…

Equal is Suing Splenda

Friday, March 9th, 2007

The makers of Equal are suing the makers of Splenda, alleging false advertising regarding: “It’s made with real sugar…” because the sugar used to make Splenda is chemically modified so Equal claims that this means it’s not made of real sugar.  And because of this, Equal wants some lost profits back due to Splenda’s alleged false advertising.  Equal claims that Splenda’s advertising is literally false, where Splenda claims it is literally true…

This will be interesting.  The makers of Equal have lost a ton of money due to the emergence and popularity of Splenda recently.  Are Splenda’s claims true?  Is Splenda “better” for you than Equal, as far as artificial sweeteners go?  This case probably won’t answer all of these questions, but it brings them to light.
